CONTACT USTwo Dreaded Words:
Root Canal
Root canal. You probably cringe when you hear those two words put together, particularly when it comes from the mouth of a dentist. Many people equate a root canal with some medieval torture from which you barely escape with your life. Although root canals are serious procedures, most of the stories told about them are merely myths.
If you have been told that you need a root canal, you will probably be wondering how you got here? What's next? Will I be able to keep my tooth?
Let's take a look at some of the most common questions that patients have about the "infamous" root canal procedure.
WHAT TYPES OF PROBLEMS REQUIRE A ROOT CANAL?
Some patients may require a basic root canal due to a painful tooth infection. Others had a root canal performed previously, and need some follow-up work, and other patients may have lost a large filling or cracked a tooth.
The goal of the root canal procedure is to preserve the structure of your tooth, making it more durable and extending its healthy life. Root canal procedures are currently performed using microscopic techniques with special files that involve less removal of tooth structure than in years past. This means that more tooth structure is remaining for us to restore. Also, more remaining tooth structure means that your tooth will have more long-term strength.
When your tooth is damaged, even to a small degree, bacteria can penetrate the tooth pulp, infecting your tooth nerve. Virtually all damaged teeth need some treatment to ensure that the tooth remains sound. So almost anyone exhibiting these types of symptoms makes a good candidate and will probably require a root canal.
When an infection has taken hold, patients typically experience noticeable sensitivity to changes in temperature. You may also notice chronic swelling near your gum line. In less severe cases, damage may not be visibly noticeable. An x-ray may be needed to reveal the true extent and scope of the tooth damage.
When left untreated, damaged teeth can lead to severe complications. The infection will eventually spread to other parts of your mouth and body. As the infection progresses, bone loss can set in near the nerve.
A root canal procedure is simpler than you may expect. Normally, only one office visit is required. After we have thoroughly examined you, we will numb the area completely. From this point on, most patients experience no more discomfort than that of a regular filling.
Once we have completely cleared out all of the bacteria, we will seal your tooth to protect it against further decay or damage. Additionally, we will seal the inside of your tooth to strengthen it further. Any additional procedures, like cosmetic restorations, can also be performed at this time.
Preserve the structure of your tooth, making it more durable and extending its healthy life!
MAKE IT HAPPEN!What Happens After My Root Canal Procedure?
After your root canal procedure, an over-the-counter pain reliever should be enough to tackle any discomfort that you may be experiencing. You may also want to avoid chewing on the side of the mouth that underwent the root canal procedure.
